Whiting, Ind. – March 23, 2018 – Every year of Nick Wolf’s career at Wheeler High School, the game at Whiting was one circled on his schedule.

After playing at Oil City Stadium each prep season as a visiting player, Wolf will compete there as a member of the home team this summer. The freshman pitcher from McHenry County College is the latest add to the Oilmen roster.

“When I played there in high school, I fell in love with the stadium, and that gave me the idea that I’d like to play for the Oilmen,” Wolf said. “The Oilmen are an awesome organization and the field is definitely amazing. I’m extremely excited to play in the MCL and I’m really looking forward to going out there and competing.”

McHenry coach Jared Wacker has been impressed by Wolf’s work ethic during his time with the team as a freshman this season.

“He sees things in the big picture and understands that he has a lot of potential, so he puts in the effort to try to develop the skills set to become the best player he can,” Wacker said. “He has a lot of initiative and wants to work. His teammates get along with him well; he has a great personality. In any type of team environment, he’s going to fit in extremely well.”

Wolf makes a conscious effort to be a good team player, something he thinks will benefit him in a summer ball situation with a group of new teammates.

“When I’m on the mound, I bring a presence about me that is very encouraging and I cheer for my teammates to make plays,” he said. “I play as hard as I can and put great trust in my teammates. So far in college, I’ve really enjoy the comradery within our team.”

The highlight of Wolf’s high school tenure with the Bearcats was throwing a no-hitter against Hammond Gavit. During the summer, he plans to see as many batters as possible and work on improving his off-speed pitches and spotting the ball better.

“The transition from high school to college has been a lot to handle,” Wolf said. “You cover more of the basics in high school. The pace of the game is definitely a lot different. I enjoy the competiveness with all of the other players and seeing how hard people work at the college level.”

Wolf describes himself as a pure lover of all sports. He also played football and basketball in high school.

“He’s an awesome kid to be around,” Wacker said. “I really enjoy having his personality around practice and around the program. He’s a happy-go-lucky guy who his teammates enjoy being around. He keeps the mood light. He’s somebody who goes to work and has fun doing it.”
