Whiting, Ind. – Feb. 26, 2023 – The Northwest Indiana Oilmen organization is saddened by the news that Oilmen legend Matt Pobereyko has passed away at the age of 31.

A member of the Oilmen in 2013 and 2014, Pobereyko holds the Northern League’s all-time career saves record with 18 and single-season record with 13. He posted a 2.57 ERA in 14 innings with 17 strikeouts in 2013. A year later, he put together one of the most dominant seasons in team history, allowing two runs in 23 innings for a sparkling ERA of 0.78, at the time a franchise record.

Pobereyko went on to a successful professional career in the United States, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. He pitched in the affiliated ranks in the Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Mets and Miami Marlins organizations, reaching as high as Triple-A with the Mets in 2018.

Pobereyko spent two seasons on the Oilmen coaching staff, serving as pitching coach under manager Adam Enright in 2015 and returning to that role under Chris Cunningham in 2020.

A Munster, Ind. native and Bishop Noll High School graduate, Pobereyko played his college ball at Kentucky Wesleyan University. The Oilmen organization extends its deepest condolences to the Poberekyo family, including Matt’s brother Danny, who is also a former Oilmen pitcher.
