Oilmen Stun Southland With Three-Run Ninth
Down by two runs in the bottom of the ninth, the Oilmen staged an improbable rally, scoring three runs in the inning and winning it 5-4 on Nick Bartolone’s walk-off single over the Southland Vikings at Oil City Stadium on Tuesday.
The win was the first such victory for NWI this season, and extended the Oilmen’s home winning streak to seven games. It also put NWI just one-half game back of their opponents tonight, the Lexington Snipes.
The rally against Southland closer Anthony Andres put the cap on a weird game, as the Vikings had 10 hits and left only five men on base, while NWI had just six hits but left 10 men on base. Andres also committed two costly throwing errors in the ninth, as Bartolone’s single was the only hit he gave up. The RBI for Bartolone was his eighth of the season in just five games played for NWI.
Statistical Odds and Ends
The six hits the Oilmen amassed last night in their win over Southland is their second-lowest hit total in a victory this season, trailing only the five-hit game they won against Southland at home on June 6.
The 3-0 deficit the Oilmen overcame also matched their biggest comeback win of the year, tying NWI’s win over Michigan City on Father’s Day.
After missing five games following a collision in the outfield at DuPage County, Nick Saldutti returned to the Oilmen lineup yesterday. He went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored as the designated hitter.
