Whiting, Ind. – July 14, 2023 – On what looked like a clear day at Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Ind., a lightning strike ended a strong Griffith Generals win. The Northwest Indiana Oilmen would lose to the Generals 5-0 with the game being called after the top of the ninth.

Silas Noe started the day for the Oilmen. Noe went four innings scattering six hits and four runs. Noe also gave up his first home run after a Nick Fies blast to left center. Tanner Sobkoviak showed strong presence in the last two innings for the Oilmen. Sobkoviak struck out four while allowing no hits and no runs.

“Sobkoviak is going to be a guy we can rely on in the late innings,” manager Adam Enright said. “Early in the year if you said, are you going to use Sobkoviak to close games, I would have said absolutely not, but now he is probably at the top of our list.”

The Oilmen tallied only three hits and scored no runs against the Generals. All of the Oilmens hits came from the bottom three men in the order, Ryan Little, Colin Schmitke and Chris Suchoski. The Oilmen struggled came through with runners in scoring position, stranding six on base.

“We had a couple of really big at-bats with runners in scoring position that we popped up on the infield,” Enright said. “We had two opportunities where we could realistically score two runs in each and then put the team in a position to score more runs.”

The Oilmen drop a fourth consecutive game to the Generals and fall to 22-14. The Oilmen will look to snap their two-game skid against the Southland Vikings on Saturday night at Oil City Stadium in Whiting Ind. First pitch is set for 7:10 pm.
