Oilmen Drop Heartbreaker To Vikings
NWI led 3-1 in the middle innings, and then 4-3 after breaking through and taking the lead in the bottom of the eighth, but the Vikings mounted a comeback against closer Matt Pobereyko (3-1) and stunned the Oilmen 6-4 at Oil City Stadium on Tuesday.
Both starters- Kevin Hallberg for Southland and Jimmy McNamara for NWI- gave up three runs and took no-decisions. The Oilmen could not capitalize on Hallberg’s wildness, leaving seven men on base in the five innings that the right-hander pitched despite drawing seven walks.
Anthony Bova finished 2-for-4, including the go-ahead RBI hit in the eighth when he beat out a slow grounder to second. Jack Czeszewski also had two hits for NWI, who finished 3-4 against their regional rivals this season. Dan Wetzel (1-0) got the win in relief for Southland.
First Roadie To Waubonsee
Tonight marks the first road game of the season for the Oilmen against the Chicago Zephyrs. It is also the first time out of five total times the teams will play each other in the next two weeks, including one doubleheader. NWI has had great success against the Zephyrs this season, winning both games at Oil City Stadium by a combined score of 17-1.
The Zephyrs play their home games at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
“Mr. Consistent” Returns
With his 2-for-5 performance against Southland, Jack Czeszewski has now reached base in 11 straight games, with at least one hit in eight of his last nine games played.
